Started in 2001, the .NAME universal TLD is the single TLD supposed to be for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, nicknames and/or other designations people are famous by. At the beginning, just third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to purchase john.doe.name, you would have to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and second-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought third-level domain names remained active.

There are no specific prerequisites on who can acquire a .NAME domain, but in order to keep the goal behind its establishment alive, the dot NAME Registry may check who the Registrant is and if there is no connection between the owner and the actual domain, the registration can be challenged.
